Task:

Select and size the pumps to handle the given flow rates and discharge pressures. There are 3 pumps that need to be sized. The pumps are as follows: pump to get the water to the barn to heat the barn, pump to get the water to the barn for it to have hot water, and the pump to get the water to the adjoining room in the house to heat the house. Do not forget to consider the NPSHA versus NPSHR, assuming that the water tank is open to atmospheric pressure (assume 14.7 psia). You will need to provide pump performance curves for the selected pumps, showing the point of operation. On the internet, potential pump vendor sites include, but are not limited to, ITT/Bell & Gosset, Goulds, or Atlas. For commonality of design, use a centrifugal pump. Smaller pumps can be found at Grundfos and Tacos.

Your submission should be in memo format with a clear, understandable layout and logical progression. Figures and tables should be placed appropriately with references in the text. Enough information needs to be given to clearly understand what is being described. You are required to find the following information as part of your design:

1. Volumetric flow rate of water in the primary loop.

2. Pipe diameter of the primary loop.

3. Total boiler heat input (assuming no heat loss in piping).

4. Primary loop starting temperature (at discharge from boiler).

5. Secondary zone volumetric flow rates (for all 5 zones).

6. Common piping volumetric flow rates (between primary loop and all three secondary zones).

7. Secondary zone pipe diameters (for all 5 zones).

8. Heat Exchanger 1 air flow rate, type of HX, and HX size (product of U*As).

9. Heat removed from hot water in HX 2.

10. Type and size (product of U*As) of Heat Exchanger 2.

11. Size of Heat Exchanger 3.

12. 6 chosen pumps for the design.

13. Piping design in cell zones.

14. Pressure drop in systems.

15. Boiler volumetric flow rates over a range of supply temps from 150oF to 250oF in increments of 5oF.Develop a computer program using Matlab to do this. Verify program with hand calculations.
