Some argue that what really matters is whether individuals know what is expected of them, work well with other people and perform their tasks successfully.

a) Discuss the extent in which you agree with this statement.(25 marks)

b) What do you see as the purpose and importance of formal structures for modern work organizations? (25 marks)

Statement 2 – 1500 words

Charisma and the ability to inspire and move loyal followers in the desired direction are one of the most controversial and elusive leadership qualities.

a) Discuss which type of leadership style is the most effective one for managing various types of followers in construction? (25 marks)

b) Provide an analytical argument for and against the contention that charismatic leadership brings about improved individual and organizational performance? Relate your answer to an example or a case study of charismatic leadership that has truly inspired his/her followers. (25 marks)

General information about submission: –

  1. The completed report should be submitted on via Turnitin in week 10.
  2. The report should be neatly presented, formally structured, word-processed and a maximum of 3000 words long. A word count should be provided; diagrams and tables are not included in the word count. The content of the report must be related to the relevant theoretical issues and arguments, and be fully referenced.
  3. A full briefing on essay writing and the essay topics will be given.
  4. The standard University Marking scheme for this assessment will be used.

  • Introduction:

Has a rationale for the content been established? Has a background to the POM topic been included? Has the approach/content to the report been set out?

  • Evidence of research investigation /referencing/bibliography:

Does the material appear to come from a variety of sources, demonstrating a range of research? Are the references properly incorporated into the text? Is the bibliography set out in an appropriate way?

  • Technical content:

Is the material relevant? Has the assessment brief been fully addressed? Is the material presented in a logical way with well-reasoned arguments and a coherent arrangement? Has additional material such as charts, &/or diagrams etc been provided to reinforce the text where appropriate? Are such charts properly cross-referenced in to the text?) Are case studies and examples been provided to underpin the discussion?

  • Conclusion:

Does the report reach a sensible conclusion that takes into account all aspects of the topic? Does the conclusion summarise the main arguments from the investigation? Is the conclusion substantiated?

  • Presentation & structure:

Is the document neatly presented, word-processed & with a title sheet, page numbering, paragraph headings, line spacing etc? Does it have a logical structure? Are there any grammatical/spelling/typographical errors?
